Gymkhana

Saturday 3rd August       8.00am

A gymkhana is an equestrian event in which riders compete in a series of events and novelty games using a range of skills and aptitudes.

The aim is for horse and rider to navigate their way through a number of patterns or obstacles to successfully complete the event faster than their competitors. Riders that knock over part of the course or drop objects will receive an additional time penalty. This event aims to create a fun and engaging morning for our young riders and some friendly rivalry amongst our older competitors.

    Unregistered Horse Races

    Saturday 3rd August – Trackside from 3pm

The Harts Range Race club started in 1947 after some informal races between station jackereroos and the local Police. Once established the club successfully held registered (and unregistered) horse races over a 3 day event for some 50 years. When the ability to get registered horses as well as officials to meet the registered races standards, the club moved to unregistered races.

Today we run 4 races of varying lengths, on the Saturday afternoon, with a tote manned by our ever supportive National Australia Bank Staff. Competitors stem from Alice Springs (retired racehorses), the Barkly stations area (where other bush races are held) and local station and communities stock.

Nominations are taken at the Secretary’s Office (next to Tote/Canteen/Racetrack shed) from 2pm.

Both Owners and Jockeys must present themselves for nominations.

    Family Sports Day

    Sunday 4th August      9am – 12noon

The Family Sports Day, held on Sunday morning, has been run by the Alice Spring Volunteer Bushfire Brigade for at least the last 25 years. The morning often begins with the sound of the fire truck siren throughout the campground rallying the kids down to the racecourse so events can begin. Events consist of Running, Sack and Three-Legged Races for all comers under 16 years and finishes with the ever-popular Lolly Scramble.

The Kids’ Events are followed by the Donny Anderson Memorial Mile seeing competitors Run, Walk, Crawl and sometimes even stagger the full length of the Racetrack. For those adults who survive The Mile
there’s another chance to take home the cash in the 100m Sprints.

Then it’s time to get your teams of 5 together for the Tug-of-War Competition before the events conclude with the always entertaining Ladies Cow Tail Toss.

Everyone is encouraged to come down to the track and get involved.

Entrants are able to register at the Racetrack Shed on Saturday (from 12-4pm) and for those under 18 years please make sure you bring a parent or guardian to sign the consent form.

    Novelty Events

Throughout the weekend the club holds Novelty Events to fill in time in between the stock events.

These are: Whip Cracking, Swag Rolling, Yard Building, Fashions on the Field, held in between the Horse Races, if time permits.

To nominate, please go to the Racetrack Shed Saturday from 12pm.

In the Rodeo Arena other Novelty Events such as our Historic Lizard Race take place.

    Lizard Race

The Iconic Harts Range Lizard Race is held inside the Rodeo Arena in between the Rodeo events each year. Lizards are collected by the local children over the weekend, and then auctioned off to the crowd to ‘own’.

Lizards are placed in the middle of a circle of rope and the first to reach the edge is the winner.

Buyers money is pooled and shared amongst the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place getters.
